Annabel Lee
Director George Higham was unable to be here for the original NW premiere of his film due to 9/11 (he works at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in NYC, providing forensic radiography to the city morgue). We welcome George and are proud to do a special screening of his film. Inspired by Edgar A. Poe's poem Annabel Lee, Poe himself comes to life through the magic of stop-motion animation. Annabel Lee is quintessential Poe- a haunted soul, a lost love and the nocturnal grave-quest. The epic quality of this Orphic adventure includes expressionist visions of a lone figure on a journey through a nightmarish landscape in order to be re-united with his lost love...but first he must overcome the wrath of the "Envious Angels" that ruined his world! This thrilling tale will make you believe...even a puppet can love. http://www.poepuppet.com |

Azathoth
When age fell upon the world, and wonder went out of the minds of men; when grey cities reared to smoky skies tall towers grim and ugly, in whose shadow none might dream of the sun or of Spring's flowering meads; when learning stripped the Earth of her mantle of beauty and poets sang no more of twisted phantoms seen with bleared and inward looking eyes; when these things had come to pass, and childish hopes had gone forever, there was a man who traveled out of life on a quest into spaces whither the world's dreams had fled.' |

Baltimore
In December of 1847, Edgar Allan Poe's child wife, Virginia, dies. Poe is left despondent and he turns to alcohol. Two years later, when Richmond socialite, Prudence Rights, tries to court the eligible author, the spirit of Virginia appears to Poe. The spirit leads Poe to discover a note she wrote while alive addressed to a man named 'Reynolds.' Poe assumes this to be a lover and shocked, he travels to Virginia's childhood home in Baltimore where he encounters Virginia's mother, Maria Clemm. Once very fond of the gentleman who married her daughter, Maria now blames Poe for for Virginia's death. Maria reveals that 'Reynolds' was a pseudonym for a man Virginia loved but came to loathe. In Virginia's old room, Poe finds his wife's journal and discovers how his obsessive work habits and frequent absences caused Virginia to hate him. He loved her childlike beauty but never considered her an equal and though Virginia was taken by Poe's eloquence she could not live with his neglect. So torn is the young woman that she commits suicide using Reynolds Rat Poison. Virginia's spirit reveals that Reynolds was a pseudonym for Poe and she has achieved her revenge. Poe is broken and stumbles out into the streets of Baltimore, mumbling 'Reynolds'. |
