Private investigator John Trent, played by Sam Neill, is called in by his client to investigate the disappearance of a phenomenally popular horror novelist named Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow). Cane has supposedly vanished as his most recent novel is nearing its deadline and his publisher (played by Charlton Heston) wants to retrieve his company's property. Trent thinks the whole thing is a publicity stunt for the new novel but eventually tracks the writer down to the remote New England town of Hobbs End (a nod to Quatermass and the Pit) which previously was thought to only exist in Cane's stories. It soon becomes clear that the wall between fantasy and reality is blurring.

The assassin returns to the scene of the crime, a deep grave nestled in a snowy park. The grave is empty. From this moment, time folds in on itself. As the two ends of the circle close in, the assassin gears up for a fateful confrontation, and his fate is revealed with the answer to the old crone's riddle: "To those who see, I cease to be. Who am I?"
